“McMaster’s Physiotherapy program is extremely unique in its use of Problem Based Learning (PBL) throughout the curriculum. Specifically, the problem based tutorials allow students to use self-directed learning through case studies to work through the material with the guidance of physiotherapists working in the field, giving insight and clinical expertise to the learning environment. These tutorials are in smaller groups which create a great space for discussion and opportunities to clarify any questions around the topics to ensure everyone is understanding the material. In addition, the concepts that are covered in tutorial align with what is being taught in clinical labs and anatomy courses allowing students to really focus on the content and apply clinical skills to the tutorials, and vice versa. The self-directed nature of the program translates extremely well to clinical placements and eventual clinical practice by having the skills to independently research unfamiliar topics and understanding how to will apply them in practice.”

“The McMaster Physiotherapy Program provides a well-rounded experience for all students. McMaster utilizes a spiral curriculum in which students are continuously building various concepts every unit throughout the two-year program. Units are alternated with clinical placements which allow students to have the opportunity to build on skills and concepts learned while in class and then take the experience gained from placement back to the next in class unit. McMaster also offers opportunities for students to complete placements in Northern Ontario. As a student who completed a placement in the Northern Studies Stream, it was amazing to explore what the North had to offer. The unique style McMaster takes with the curriculum also includes Problem Based Learning. This allows students to learn in smaller groups; sharing prior knowledge and experiences, seeking best evidence and being able to ask questions in a safe environment with the guidance of a tutor. Students are able to build on skills such as collaboration with peers and professors/tutors, communication and critical thinking skills throughout the program which will foster a solid foundation for future practicing physiotherapists.”
